EXERCISE 1:

Sounds [ø] and [œ] (peu, peur)

Step 1: Listen to each sound and its examples.

[ø]: bleu (blue), nœud (knot), ceux (those)
[œ]: sœur (sister), seul (alone), jeune (young)

🗣 NOTE:

  • For the sound [ø], the mouth is closed, the lips are rounded, the tongue is positioned forward and touches the lower teeth.

  • For the sound [œ], the mouth is open, the lips are rounded, and the tongue is also positioned forward, touching the lower teeth.

📌 The only difference in pronunciation between the two sounds is the mouth's openness.

Step 2: Listen to the following ten words, and write down (in a notebook) the sounds you hear: [ø] or [œ]?
