Today, we’re learning a very common French verb, and that’s the verb “parler,” which means to speak or to talk. We’ll look at how to conjugate parler in the present tense.

Conjugation

Alright, let’s conjugate parler in the present tense.

Before we jump in: remember that the present tense is used to talk about what’s happening now, and things you do regularly.

  • je parle (I speak)

  • tu parles (you speak— informal)

  • il / elle parle (he / she speaks)

  • on parle (we speak— informal)

  • nous parlons (we speak)

  • vous parlez (you speak— formal or plural)

  • ils / elles parlent (they speak)

Example Sentences

Now, let’s see some example sentences. Please repeat after me:

  • Je parle français. (I speak French.)

  • Est-ce que tu parles anglais ? (Do you speak English?)

  • Elle parle très bien l’espagnol. (She speaks Spanish very well.)

  • On parle avec notre professeur. (We’re talking with our teacher.)

  • Nous parlons de notre week-end. (We’re talking about our weekend.)

  • Vous parlez trop vite ! (You speak too fast!)

  • Ils ne parlent pas la même langue. (They don’t speak the same language.)
