Hello everyone! Bonjour tout le monde.

Welcome back to the French Made Easy podcast. This is episode 232, numéro deux cent trente-deux !

Today, we're going back to the kitchen. You've already learned your fruit in episode 25 and your vegetables in episode 26 of the podcast (a while back!), and now it's time for the next step: meat, fish and seafood in French.

Alright, let's get into it.

LA VIANDE (MEAT)

Let's start with meat, which is la viande in French. Please repeat after me:

  • le poulet (chicken)

  • le bÅ“uf (beef)

  • le porc (pork) (the final C is silent, by the way.)

  • l'agneau (lamb)

  • la dinde (turkey)

  • le jambon (ham)

  • la saucisse (sausage)

Now let's see some example sentences. Please repeat after me:

  • Ce soir, on mange un poulet rôti. (Tonight, we're eating a roast chicken.)

  • J'adore le bÅ“uf bourguignon. (I love beef bourguignon.)

  • Le porc est souvent moins cher que le bÅ“uf. (Pork is cheaper than beef.)

  • À Pâques, nous mangeons de l'agneau. (At Easter, we eat lamb.)

  • Je vais prendre un sandwich à la dinde. (I'll have a turkey sandwich.)

  • Un sandwich jambon beurre, s'il vous plaît ! (A ham and butter sandwich, please!)

  • Nos enfants adorent les saucisses. (Our children love sausages.)

Et voilà, that's seven meat words to start your list.

LE POISSON (FISH)

Next, let's look at fish, which is le poisson. Please repeat after me:

  • le saumon (salmon)

  • le thon (tuna) (the H is silent)

  • le cabillaud (cod)

  • la truite (trout)

Now let's see some example sentences. Please repeat after me:

  • J’achète du saumon fumé. (I'm buying smoked salmon.)

  • Il y a du thon dans la salade niçoise. (There's tuna in the niçoise salad.)

  • Le cabillaud est un poisson blanc. (Cod is a white fish.)

  • Arthur pêche une truite dans la rivière. (Arthur catches a trout in the river.)

So that was four fish words to add to your shopping list.

LES FRUITS DE MER (SEAFOOD)

And finally, seafood. In French, we say les fruits de mer. Literally translated "fruits of the sea."

Please repeat after me:

  • les crevettes (prawns / shrimp)

  • les moules (mussels)

  • les huîtres (oysters)

  • le crabe (crab)

Now let's see some example sentences. Please repeat after me:

  • J'achète des crevettes au marché. (I'm buying prawns at the market.)

  • On mange des moules frites au bord de la mer. (We're eating mussels and fries by the sea.)

  • En France, on mange souvent des huîtres Ã  Noël. (In France, people often eat oysters at Christmas.)

  • Nous prenons une salade de crabe. (We're having a crab salad.)

And that's your four seafood words.
