Hello everyone, bonjour tout le monde! Today, we are learning the pronunciation of the French word ‘champagne’. And since we Christmas and New Year coming up very soon, I think this episode is perfectly timed! Now I think you probably all know what ‘champagne’ is, since it’s a word that’s also used in many different languages, but I want to give you the French pronunciation for it.

So I’ll give you the pronunciation of the word first, syllable by syllable, and then I’ll give you some sentences with that word to practice your pronunciation.

Let’s SEE the French pronunciation of champagne. I’ll break it down for you.

HOW TO PRONOUNCE CHAMPAGNE IN FRENCH 🥂

Champagne: 2 syllables: [ʃɑ̃.paɲ]

  • First syllable: ‘cham’ [ʃɑ̃]

‘ch’: pronounced [ʃ]

‘am’: pronounced [ɑ̃]

(Attention, it’s not pronounced [tʃɑ̃]!)

  • Next syllable! ‘pagne’ [paɲ]

'p’: [p]

'a': [a]

'gne' : [ɲ], (pronounced like the letters ‘ni’ from the word onion)

Let’s combine combine these 2 syllables, we have [ʃɑ̃.paɲ].

Voilà! You've just pronounced 'Champagne' the French way!

Now, let's practice with some sentences with our word 'Champagne':

  1. On boit du champagne pour célébrer le Nouvel An. (We are drinking champagne to celebrate the New Year.
